This retreat focuses on bringing together your passion for art and painting from the heart. We are concentrating on portraits, so we challenge you to paint someone or something you love. Perhaps someone you have missed during lockdown or someone who has helped you through this extraordinary year; lock in your good lockdown memories. Lockdown certainly made us all look at what's important in life. I discovered the overwhelming joy of painting who I love. What better gift can we leave our children, grandparent, best friend, than a heartfelt personal painting.

This retreat is a collaboration between Brooklands Barn, a reputable, beautifully appointed, spacious retreat venue in Arundel, West Sussex; Karin Moorhouse, an established life long painter and art teacher; Piers Ottey's Mill Studio, a highly regarded West Sussex artist and tutor who has built Mill Studios to its enviable reputation and where the painting sessions will take place. Two beautiful venues which will inspire and relax you in equal measures, during your weekend retreat.

Host, Claire owner of Brooklands Barn

If you're like me and have always loved painting, but life has taken over and you don't think you can justify the time out to paint, then this is what you've been looking for. I hadn't picked up a paintbrush for 30 years until I started searching and discovered The Mill Studio a mile up the road, where I found the inspiration of Piers and Karin. This retreat is to encourage people to rekindle their passion for art and to paint something that has really deep personal value and is not just another still life. My father passed away with no warning, he was a fit and young man. He was a great artist, but never really pursued his passion, nor explored his talent. I felt great sadness that he never painted any of his family. This gave me the motivation to pursue my love of painting and began to paint my own family. Painting from the heart, is hugely cathartic, and I am most definitely in my meditative state when I paint; a chance to forget about the worries of life; the hours pass with no thought other than looking at what I'm painting. This is how HEART retreats came about. My newly explored passion gave me such a feeling of humility and fulfilment, that I wanted to share it with others who may also have a longing to paint and to make it meaningful; painting from the heart.

Tutor, Karin Karin Moorhouse Art
Karin has over 30 years experience, of painting, designing and teaching. When she left art school she worked for a large London based design company before setting out on her own path. This has taken her from textile design studios to worldwide sales trips, with interior and garden design en route. Karin is now a full time artist and teacher, with exhibitions in London, and plays a huge part in the Arundel Gallery Trail, one of the longest running open house art events in the country. Like me, her love is to record and hold memories of her family by way of her portraiture. Her website says it all.

The course includes 15 hours of tutoring with Karin. Karin will be working on demos, offering one to one personal attention, whilst helping make the most of the value from working in a group and painting together.
